In
the numbers explosion all around us in our modern-day dealings, the
buzzword is data, as in, ¡°Do you have any data to support your claim?¡±
¡°The data supported the original hypothesis that . . .¡± and ¡°The
data bear this out. . . .¡± But the field of statistics is not just
about data. Statistics is the entire process involved in gathering
evidence to answer questions about the world, in cases where that
evidence happens to be numerical data.

Unified Signal Theory
0 comments
2011 | 946 Pages | ISBN: 0857294636 | PDF | 14.81 Mb
Unified Signal Theory is an indispensible textbook dealing with
the theory of deterministic signals; a topic of fundamental interest to
graduates and senior undergraduates in the areas of information
engineering (telecommunications, control, systems theory and
electronics), astronomy, oceanography, earth science, biology and
medicine.
The unified theory follows an innovative approach ¨C that
of combining all signal classes into just one. The fundamental signal
operations (convolution, Fourier transform, linear systems, sampling and
interpolation) are established simultaneously for all the signal
classes. This unified approach avoids the repetition of similar concepts
consequent on other approaches¡¯ separate treatment of definitions and
properties for each signal class. Modern wavelet ideas are developed in
harmony with the rest of the text.
Unified Signal Theory provides:
exercises and examples, to give the student practice;
solutions which are available for download and save the tutor time; and
a choice of two suggested reading paths depending on the level of the student, for an enhanced learning experience.
The
advantages of the unified approach are many: it permits a global vision
of the topic, it is economical in teaching and learning, and it can be
adjusted easily to fit new applications. This textbook presents the
theory in five chapters, and goes on to demonstrate specific
applications such as fast Fourier transform implementation, sampling and
reconstructions of signals, multicarrier modulation systems, image
scanning and tomography, in a further six chapters. Mathematical
concepts are introduced conceptually within the body of the book with
more rigorous treatment being reserved for the appendices.

2011 | 232 Pages | ISBN: 111801068X | PDF | 2 MB
Modelica,
the new object-based software/hardware modeling language that is
quickly gaining popularity around the world, offers an almost universal
approach to high-level computational modeling and simulation. It handles
a broad range of application domains, for example mechanics, electrical
systems, control, and thermodynamics, and facilitates general notation
as well as powerful abstractions and efficient implementations. Using
the versatile Modelica language and its associated technology, this text
presents an object-oriented, component-based approach that makes it
possible for readers to quickly master the basics of computer-supported
equation-based object-oriented (EOO) mathematical modeling and
simulation.

Effect Sizes for Research: A Broad Practical Approach
0 comments
2005 | 272 Pages | ISBN: 0805850147 | PDF | 17 MB
The
goal of this book is to inform a broad readership about a variety of
measures and estimators of effect sizes for research, their proper
applications and interpretations, and their limitations. Its focus is on
analyzing post-research results. The book provides an evenhanded
account of controversial issues in the field, such as the role of
significance testing. Consistent with the trend toward greater use of
robust statistical methods, the book pays much attention to the
statistical assumptions of the methods and to robust measures of effect
size.

Richard
Dawkins is the world’s best-known champion of both atheism and its
intellectual underpinning, particles-to-people evolution. His latest
book, The Greatest Show on Earth: the evidence for evolution is touted
as an unanswerable challenge to those who believe in divine creation. In
the past, he says, he has assumed evolution; this time he lays out in
one major book the evidence for evolution (and its corollary, vast
geological ages).

This
invaluable textbook serves two purposes. The first is to introduce some
traditional topics such as matrix formalism of geometrical optics, wave
propagation and diffraction, and some fundamental background on fourier
optics. The second is to present the essentials of acousto-optics and
electro-optics, and provide the students with experience in modeling the
theory and applications using a commonly used software tool
MATLAB[registered]. The book is based on the authors’ own in-class
lectures as well as researches in the area.

The
synthesis of very complex saccharide structures is one of the most
challenging areas of modern glycoscience. This volume presents the state
of the art of complex carbohydrate synthesis, written by leading
scientists whose groups are making major contributions in the field.
Reflecting the particular interest in inhibitors and modulators as well
as in mimetics, an in-cepth treatment is given both of their selective
syntheses and of their biological implications. In addition the concept
of multivalent glycoconjugate recognition as well as supramolecular
implications of amphiphilic carbohydrates are highlighted.
